Hey I'm planning on attending UNLV in the Spring and my parents are looking to buy me a condo or home. They want something close to the strip, close to the school, but still only newer communities that are safe and nice. We have no idea where to start so your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The area around UNLV is not the best. You might want to look at rhodes ranch, HW 215 is close by on both ends. You could look on the west side is closer to the strip but not close that to UNLV. Good luck

Yes, hello10 is right. I live in the University Park Apartments right next to UNLV. They are a total dump, roach infested, break ins ETC. It sounds to me like you have never even been to Vegas. The entire area around UNLV is old and ghetto.

The areas immediately around UNLV aren't the nicest.

The closest nice areas would be Silverado Ranch and Green Valley.

The southwest valley around Rhodes Ranch (like hello10 recommend) is nice, but would be a bit further away.

Honestly, I'd say that Silverado would be your best bet.

Thank you radraja for naming some areas. I've been looking in Silverado Ranch and I think I like them better than Green Valley. Thanks again!

The spec is not simple until you get to some reasonable prices...

However University Crest is not new but is livable. 35 years old. Many units redone. Go from $60K (likely beatup) to $150K (in very good shape.) Far and away the most convenient units to UNLV and pretty good for the strip.

There are excellent units in the LVCC which is both the nicest and safest area around the strip. The only things below 200K will likely be conversions and everything is at least 25 years old. As well the HOA fees are high. Theses are convenient to UNLV and very convenient to the strip.

Newer are the Manhattan Condos which are reasonably convenient to the strip and UNLV. High HOAs. Park Avenue is similar though tied up in litigation.

The Silverado area is also suitable. A little less convenient but quite OK. Use the 89123 area codes. For the more suburban places Southern Highlands would work and probably some pretty good foreclosures buys in there.

Default Living near UNLV

The area around UNLV is pretty eclectic. A huge urban apartment complex is going up across the street on Tropicana. There is a small neighborhood right across the street from Thomas and Mack and across from the UNLV extension offices on Bock St. That neighborhood is actually safe. Nobody knows it is there. A house on that street used to be a frat house and it was great. Liberace Mansion is in that neighborhood along with a youth charity that took 3 houses. It seems the guy who owns Liberace Mansion is cleaning up that neighborhood. Walk to school, walk to the store. Cheap Uber to the Airport, MGM, Hard Rock. We used to walk to the Hard Rock and there is slew of eateries and coffee houses all walking distance. I never had one problem in over 4 years of being there. If I could buy one of those houses and rent it out to students I would. Loved it.
