Hi everyone. just need some good advice for relocation to the lehigh area. my husband and our 3 boys are looking at homes in the northampton area. we will be relocating there this spring/summer after we sell our home. We currently live in the harrisburg area but my husband took a new position with a company located in new jersey. We have looked at some surrounding areas also. What do you think of the schools in the northampton school district? All of our kids our in school. grades 1, 9th, and 10th they will be attending for the upcomming school year. We found some nice homes in our price range in Bath, allen twp, and so on. Are these areas good ? crime wise, etc? Any advice would be great. thanks!

Very low crime in the townships. The Northampton County school district and the Nazareth Area school district get decent rankings.

But with that many school age children, why not buy in Hellertown? There are homes as affordable as Bath, and your children would be in the Saucon Valley School District, which is by far the best in the county.

Hellertown has much easier access to New Jersey as well.

Northampton Borough, and many of its neighbors (Catasaqua, Coplay) have a strong "white-ethnic" / blue-collar image. The town still has a afair share of heavy industry, including a couple of cement plants, and this helps to keep property taxes down somewhat, but the schools still face the overstaffing, over-suburbabization, and Political Correctness isues which, to my way of thinking, have done a lot to damage our educational system.

Like all the towns in the upper Lehigh Valley and, for that matter, much of Northeastern Pennsylvania, respect for the military, and a family tradition of service are particularly high in this area; Navy SEAL-turned-author Richard Marcinko grew up in Nesquehoning, a half-hour or so upriver in Carbon County.

i'm in semi-retirement, and currently divide my time between the Lehigh Valley and lower Luzerne County, and am very pleased with both.

The northern part of the country is usually 11% or less minority.

Default Median prices per municipality 2005-2009

The Lehigh Planning Commission published median prices for 2005-2009 for the 62 communities. It gives you some idea of the prices in the different municipalities. I wouldn't put too much stock in the absolute values given the amount of change in real estate prices in the last few years, but it gives you a rough idea of how expensive real estate is.

There are three types of municipalities. Three cities in the two counties, then there are boroughs which are basically miniature towns. Townships traditionally were the farmlands, but some of them have become very developed. There are two Hanover Townships (one in each county). The Lehigh County township consists of a few hundred houses and the airport region.

Median prices are different than average prices. A Median says half the homes are more and half are less. They can be a whole lot more. Generally a high median means there is no low cost homes. It says very little about the mansions.

Generally boroughs are cheaper than townships, as the homes are older and smaller. Exceptions are boroughs with convenient access to Interstates. Portland is very near I80, and Coopersburg is near the Bucks County line and on the main surface street to Philadelphia.

North Catasauqua and Catasauqua are nice areas to live. They have their own school district and for the most part is a quite place. Right near the Lehigh River. I use to live there and the River is almost in my backyard.

I like my area in the Southern Lehigh School district. One thing to consider is the size of the school district, overcrowding, school taxes and size of High School's. Smaller school districts include Northampton, Nazareth, Southern Lehigh and Saucon Valley. Large school districts are East Penn and Parkland. This site - Pennsylvania Schools - Find a Public or Private Pennsylvania School - SchoolDigger.com allows you to compare stats. If your husband will be commuting to NJ everyday, I would suggest not going as far as Macungie or Parkland. Saucon Valley (Hellertown) is a good choice. Winters can be rough and the commute on route 78 is a wide open highway subject to snow drift with lots of truck traffic.
