Nowhere in London is dangerous in the American sense. It's a safe city. People are warm and welcoming and there's little crime other than the odd bit of drunkenness.
People often perceive the poorer boroughs - i.e. Lewisham, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Brent - as being the most "dangerous", but really this is of little relevance as a visitor.
In reality there is nowhere in London outside of the worst estates (housing projects) I wouldn't wander around in. If you're unlucky enough to be a victim of crime (muggings and robbery are sadly common all over London) it's just as likely to be down an unlit backstreet in the West End or Camden than in some super-ghetto area out east. Pickpocketing is most likely to happen in the most touristy areas of all (i.e. Leicester Sq, or near Buckingham Palace).
Just exercise the usual precautions you would in any major world city and you'll be fine.

Parts of London are as unsafe as a lot of American cities, Detroit, New Orleans etc aren't the norm in the USA. Parts of Lewisham, Tower Hamlets etc can be as dodgy as anywhere in Western Europe, New York etc.
Basically anywhere in London with a significant black population is dodgy.
I know we're not supposed to say this these days but young blacks carry out disproportionately more violent street crime than their white or Asian counterparts.
In that respect London mirrors most major US cities.
Mind you, East Europeans are catching up rapidly in the who's killing who league of scary hoods.
