I had a similar issue when we were looking to buy a home (2010)...both work in nyc and wanted to be close to train to avoid the parking situation. Our decision came down to a house in New Hyde Park or one in Mineola... both walking distance (5-10min) to LIRR. We chose the one in Mineola mainly b/c our dollar bought more sq footage in Mineola than NHP, short walk to train, and frequency of train service ( huge plus espc for the late nights in city).

hope this helps.
Thanks. Still in the market in Mineola. Unfortunately, the house that we want, the seller is not really wanting to come down on price.
Looking in the area south of Jericho so that my wife can just walk to the train.

I walk everyday 2 miles to the train and 2 miles back (not in Mineola though) and to be honest I'd prefer a longer walk than that. Parking at any train station is awful. When I used to park @ my old station, I would see people totally disrespecting other people's cars. An ex of mine had his tires taken off his car twice. Walking. Trying to park @ any station isn't worth it IMO.

mineola has a village commuter parking permit which is $55 for the year and has designated areas. I take the 8:42am train and don't have any issues finding one. I live in mineola
