I just want to make sure I would not be moving into a slum, or a place where I would be concerned for my girlfriend's well being when I was not at home, etc, or a high crime area.
The border of the SSP seems to be where it starts to get seedy, at least at first glance, but I wanted to know some opinions of those who actually live in the area, just to be sure.

Most of the Town of Islip is great. I am over in Holbrook (Islip side) and was in Oakdale before that for a while. While there are problem parts, the Town is pretty good at keeping things nice.

Holbrook is very nice, I have a friend who lives there. You said Islip side are there other parts of holbrook that are TOB???

Holbrook and to a lesser degree Holtsville are split among TOI and TOB.
Blue/white street signs= Islip Town
Green/white street signs = Brookhaven Town.
Roughly just south of the LIE is the dividing line between Islip and Brookhaven for Holbrook. For normal people its roughly the Union Avenue line that divides the 2. The actual border moves around a bit.
I admit at the outset that my knowledge of most of Suffolk County is limited as I have been a Nassau County resident my entire life. That said, when a poster comes to CD they area often times looking for constructive opinions about the subject. To say this is a high crime area may or may not be factual. It would be better if you were able to support your positions as many do.
There is good and bad no matter where you go, some better/worse than others. NYXli980 is asking very good questions about an important issue and to say you would not be caught dead walking there day or night is useless unless the reasons with back up facts are provided. Try to be helpful everyone.
The only parts of the Town of Islip that are "bad" are Brentwood, Baywood (aka South Brentwood), North Bay Shore, and Central Islip ... and even then many of those communities have some reasonably nice areas. While they may have high violent crime rates by Long Island standards they are still much lower than what would be considered high crime by the national standards.

On another note related to the OP. Our son just purchased a house on Pine St. Just East of 111 and 2 blocks North of Sunrise. Older neighborhood. The area where you're considering should be just fine. School district is rated well but it sounds like that's not a concern of yours at this time.
I grew up in the Islip area. Islip has changed alot, same with Central islip. If you go to West islip or East Islip to buy, your in a great area for ever pretty much. Great safe areas' and they have the best schools.
