Yup, it could have been any one of the varmits mentioned. Most likely, a roaming cat (feral or otherwise) found the tasty snack.
Oh, and once the mom was scared off, that was it for the eggs. She would never have returned.
I've never known a "roaming cat, feral or otherwise" to eat eggs that are in shell. Huh????
More likely a raccoon or possum. It's not nice but it is nature.
Some waterfowl get rid of the evidence of hatchings quickly so that predators are not looking for a young tastey meal. However, mallard moms tend to lead their newborns some distance away from the nests as soon as possible, sometimes as far as a couple of miles.
This morning, I see the Mom with its chicks on my patio, guess how many ? Seven, yeah right !!
So, I think they are going in circles searching for food (I guess), not sure whats going on, but they could just walk out of my yard in search of food if they want to.

Well then this is a learning opportunity for you. Feral cats will eat pretty much anything resembling food, including bird (ie., duck) eggs. You'd be surprised at what they'll eat.
