Oceanside sucks now. It was gradually going downhill before the hurricane but now it's reallly falling apart. It's still relatively safe but crime is increasing with more muggings, robberies and degenerate behaviour. Given the OP will only be around for a year I wouldn't rule out Oceanside completely but I would not recommend buying or long term residency. RVC is the best bet.

Rockville Centre and Lynbrook are both good choices for a one year rental if the OP has a car. Most of Oceanside and Long Beach are safe too, as far as I know. Rockville Centre has a lot of restaurants and bars so it might be more fun to live there than elsewhere. Someone mentioned freeport - in general freeport is safe but some areas are not so safe.

If you can find a place in Rockville Ctr for $1500 then go for it.

Muggings and robberies in Oceanside? According to what?

Im a male in my upper 20s. Not looking to go out a lot really.
Daily commute of up to 30-40 minutes at most I hope.
Access to city would be nice, but not necessary.

I'm also in my late 20s and rent in Long Beach. For $1500, you could get a nice one bedroom here. Obviously, there's risk of flooding, since you're living 1 minute from the ocean, but it's a nice, friendly town, and I really enjoy being able to walk around to get my errands done on the weekends instead of having to climb into my car every time I run out of milk. If you're looking for relative quiet, stick to the East End, and the ocean side is nicer than the bay side (also a little less flood prone). Check the flood map - you want a place that's in the 100-year or 500-year flood plain. Additionally, you may prefer not to be on the first floor, to further mitigate flood risk. Whatever you do (and no matter how good a deal it is) do NOT rent an apartment that is below-grade. Also, any apartment that is newly renovated flooded during Hurricane Sandy, so be aware that the shiniest apartments are the more flood-prone.

The flood risk situation isn't for everyone, so if its not for you, Rockville Centre, Oceanside near Rockville Centre, and Lynbrook are good options as well. Huntington Village is also nice for singles, but it's a good bit further away from where you'll be working.

Risk? It's honestly a guarantee that LB/Oceanside floods. If you're fine with that then great, but it's not a point anyone should really downplay.

Why the incessant need to spew this nonsense on every topic about the area. We get it you don't fit in. There are plenty of flood safe homes available in the area.

Completely untrue. I live on the first floor a block from the ocean in Long Beach, and we had no flooding at all during Sandy. We weren't the only ones who escaped damage. No need to overplay it, especially when you don't even live here and therefore don't know what you're talking about, Kay.

Hm. I have lived in, worked in and am friends with quite a few people who live/work/play in Long Beach and Oceanside. There are some who, despite admitting faults, will never leave LB. That's fine. There are also those who understand the issues.

Believe me or not, flooding is a problem in LB and Island Park. I'm glad you didn't have issues with Sandy but I know people who had to bring their families to their attics to escape flooding from Sandy. And I have been through LB during bad rain storms, there is localized flooding and poor drainage in LB.
