Robert Moses designed the low height to keep commercial traffic from going on the parkways(parkways were originally meant to be pleasant driving roads through the "country"). Saying that it was designed to keep minorities and poor people from going to the beaches is speculation.

That's why it's called Sunken Ghetto.

Absolutely not. Under the guise of keeping commercial traffic out, what the low bridges were meant to do was keep the NYC BUSES out. The minorities of NYC, who were mostly very poor and primarily used public transportation, now had virtually no way to travel out east. As politicians and well known, well-to-do public figures, they certainly couldn't come right out and say this, hence the "commercial vehicle" excuse.

Disagree, somewhat. While I don't doubt that RM was a racist, supposedly, he even dispised Jews, having been Jewish himself. This is pure speculation, published by Robert Caro's Power Broker.

If Moses' sole intent of the low bridges was to keep NYC minorities from using the Long Island beaches, why would all his other parkways have the same low bridges?

It was done to make the roads beatiful. He told his designers, to make them as they like, so long as no two were the same (at least for the SSP anyway, as that was the first one)

Arched stone bridges are prettier to look at than steel hulking structures found elsewhere.

Look at the original bridges on the Belt/Laurelton/Cross Island/Grand Central Parkways. They're the same bridges. He wasnt trying to keep minorities anywhere with the bridges.

I was wondering what I was supposed to be looking for.

This happens more often than you would think-- and it's super aggravating!

I can't tell you how many times I was late for work because some bozo tried to drive a truck on the parkway (the arches made it worse, because they'd change lanes to the left for the higher clearance, only to block out two lanes on impact). There should be super heavy fines for this.

About around '05-'07, they replaced (almost) all signs leading to the parkway system with those yellow warning signs. There's just no excuse. A city as large as New York with as many parkways as it has should have a notoriety among truck drivers to know where they're going.

This is one of life's greatest mysteries...

When you take the driver license test here in NC you have to take a sign test that is separate from the written test. They show you a sign with nothing on it and you have to say what it might be. So if they show you a diamond shaped sign that is yellow you have to tell them what verbiage or picture might be on it! Freaked me out lol

Robert Moses & his family were members of Saint Peters by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in West Bay Shore.
