What is ironic is that it is the SAME unions that is keeping cell signals out of the tunnels!! How do I know that? I know someone close to me who is a RF engineer for one of the big providers...he said one big reason is about the bucks and the unions blockcading to install cell towers.
NYC is suppose to be a first rate city with backward services. I go to places like hong kong, the cell service is crystal clear throughout the whole system.

I'm thankful that cell phones dont work in the tunnels. I wish the rest of the trains were equipped with jammers.

I agree.
Its the people who have no courtesy. I've been to foreign countries where people talk on the cell phone on train and its a non issue....they talk very very low & discreetly. In nyc, its like a shouting match.
No defender of the LIRR but help me understand the logic. I have riden on the Acela and they provide free wi-fi but the train fares for my trips have been around $80 one-way. When I take a flight, most airlines now provide wi-fi, but at an additional cost. Generally, the monthly LIRR pass averages to about ~$5 for a one way trip. Why would they provide free wi-fi at this fee?
I remember something about Cablevision looking to work with the LIRR, to provide it with the Optimum WiFi. It would be free for cable customers, and pay to use for everyone else. I think the issue died.

LIRR & subway pass is $400/mo. which is a lot but yes if you split it up, LIRR alone isn't bad. But still, unions can die a painful death.
they should give you free massages for what you pay
Absolutely, you should get concierge service for fares we pay.
