Gas heat on average is usually cheaper than oil. I think the people who brag about low heating costs w / oil are prob those folks who keep their thermostats at 60 degrees F all winter.
FWIW, we are looking for a home to buy and I will not even consider a house that has oil heat, or has no gas service on the street. Converting can be anywhere from $5-12K, but if your street doesn't have gas service, it probably isn't worth it. I'd just move..

in theory, if you keep a low thermostatt temp for gas heat, wouldn't it be lower bill too?
As I recall, I found authoritative web sites that showed the average price for oil and the equivalent for gas. It may have been NYSERDA or National Grid. I'm not exactly sure. I don't have time to research it now.
All I know is that I'd switch to gas if the savings were only 10%. We're moving from an oil house to one with gas, so I'll report back on the savings next winter.
I know this is an older thread, but I just wanted to mention since I just did the calculations... I spent $1008 total in gas bills last year. This includes all 12 months (range was $38-$250/mo.)and cooking for a 4-person household 2700sqft. Stupid low, compared to what we had paid in oil in the previous house. I think it was at least $2500 not including cooking (electric).
What people are saying about never buying a house with oil again makes sense. No more hassling with oil companies every year either. I still have to do it for my mom's house and dread it. I will mention that we didn't consider it being a gas house to have any benefit at first - neither did the sellers and the cost was never higher because of it. Don't think you'll get your money back when you sell, but if you live there 7+ years you'll break even on your conversion cost.

Oil heat and cheap in the same sentence??? Lol..nope! As far as not buying a house because it has oil? That seems ridiculous.
