I live in Islip and on one of the nearby streets there is a sign on someone's lawn that says "Drive like your kids live here". This particular street has many kids playing in the road. You have to be extra cautious when you drive. We played in the streets back in the 70's and 80's at age 6 and we always watched out for cars. If you are so worried about your kid running into the street then you need to teach them not to do this. My niece age 2 and nephew age 4 have been taught this. They never dart out into the street but they are allowed in the street if my brother or SIL is there. If this concerns the OP greatly then politely talk to the parents and explain. Kids would rather play in the street than in the back yard.
