Hi Bev
Do you know how to access the cemetery records. I am searching for an Edna Gertrude Beasley born about 1892 in Texas and may have placed in the "Hospital" in 1928. We feel she probably died there, but no idea when.

HI I have a photo of Edna's headstone. pm me and I will forward to you.
Yes it is just behind the Tuoro law centre enclosed behind a fence but at present there is no access. graves are marked with flat numbered stones but a few have names and the area is mowed and grass covers many stones.
The Jewish part of the cemetary has a monument.
The Jewish Law Institute has entered into an agreement with the New York State Office of Mental Health to embark upon the Central Islip Cemetery Restoration Project. Through the project, Touro Law Center will help maintain a Jewish cemetery, which currently sits adjacent to the Law School for patients from nearby psychiatric hospitals. The Jewish cemetery is part of a larger cemetery, which serves as the resting grounds of approximately 5,000 former patients of the Central Islip State Hospital. The project aims to help restore the larger cemetery as well.

It was very nice of you to do that. Why don't you create a virtual memorial for Edna on findagrave.com? You can also upload the photo there. It's easy to do and there's no cost (unless you want to sponsor a memorial and that isn't mandatory).

Findagrave is an amazing service. I found my grandfather (whom I've never met) that way.
My goodness, what a nightmare. Development progress is hindered because of this long lost cemetery. Exhuming the coffins and bodies to relocate them to a maintained facility makes better sense in this case.

That’s very nice of you. That person only has two posts and hasn’t posted here since 2007 so he probably won’t see your offer unless he’s been checking this thread for 13 years without participating. Maybe if you send him a pm he might get alerted by email that he has a message. It would be sad if he didn’t know you had the photo.
