I had carpeting taken out and wood floors refinished in my split-level home last June. Now one of my wood stairs is cracked. I called the company that refinished the floors but they said they can't repair it; instead, they advised me to call a "stair guy."

Um. Does anyone know a reputable stair guy that's willing to fix a single cracked and chipping stair? I feel like a lot of companies only want to come for big jobs... and DIY is not an option.

You have to fix a cracked step from below. I had two on my staircase for years in my split that had a crack. When when we redid room below had ceiling down the guy used braces and screws from beneath to tighten them which left only a hairline crack on top. Then we put sheetrock back up.

They sell pre-fab staircases. For my lower level staircase to den we just bought a new staircase and installed. Cheaper than hiring a carpenter to do a major repair.

I had a handiman install pretty much with a helper.

Do I really need a new staircase because of one stair with a crack?!?

A quick google of "Stair Repair Long Island" turns up several results, including:

Stair Builders By A & A
No reviews · Stair Contractor
112 Taft Ave · (516) 481-2295

Long Island Stair Builders
No reviews · General Contractor
11611 101st Ave · (718) 849-4647

Deer Park Stairbuilding & Millwork Co., Inc

I know nothing about any of them - just showing what turned up on Google.

A single cracked stair can be repaired - you shouldn't have to replace the entire staircase.

You can fix from above too. But in my case it was a 60 year old staircase, with boards that ran along side and trim on top of staircase plank. To get the single step out required a lot of work and if I just patched it and tried to woodglue crack etc it would come apart.

If you can just cut sheetrock enough to get it from underneath it is easy. Or if newer staircase easier. I had 60 years worth of paint and wood stain so hard to just pull out one step.

They won't do a repair; they told me they only install new sets of stairs...

This ought to be able to be done by a carpenter or skilled handyman. Unless there is something unique about your stairs, the fix here is not to repair the tread, but to replace it, particularly since the stairs were just refinished and color matching ought not be a problem. You might also try a place that installs (not refinishes) hardwood floors, as they often need to install hardwood stair treads and landings. The most difficult part is getting out the balusters. New treads are readily available, at a big box store or somewhere like this.
