In the 70's, there used to be a commercial for a driving school- in it, a wife says to her husband "You start to live when you learn to drive".
A good reworking of that would be "You start to live when you escape Long Island!"
Congrats, Fred!!!!!!
You'll find that neighbors in your new locale will be a lot nicer, because they are happier- not having to scratch and claw for a small fortune just to pay the taxes; and because they can actually enjoy a normal life, not spending their days sitting in traffic or on a crowded train, and being able to enjoy parks with other happy people who don't have to pay a fee/get a permit just to do so.
Truly, even if you think you know how much LI sucks now, you'll look back a few years from now and wonder how you even tolerated it for so long. You realize how nice life can be, and gain more perspective, once you are away from the craziness.
When you leave LI, you're not just moving; you're truly starting a new life.
Congrats Fred. Good luck to you. I want to do the same thing as you. I have been thinking of moving to Tampa bay, FL for a while. I want to go there because I heard the economy and job market is booming there. Will see what happens.
