~#~ The 51st State ~#~
Any opinions on Long Island becoming the 51st state (as proposed by more than one official ) ? Do you think it'll ever happen ?

Before Long Island even discusses seceding from New York State and becoming a state, first, let Suffolk County's 5 eastern towns (Riverhead, Southold, Shelter Island, Southampton and East Hampton) secede and form Peconic County.

That would be nice.
It won't happen, but there should be a push to at least add BK and Queens to the "state." That's something to mess with! Of course, it you add all of NYC and maybe Westchester, you would have a powerhouse, I would think.
That being said...it's not going to happen.

No need to discuss it
The U.S. Constitution forbids the partition of states so the argument is pointless. Who ever proposes such a thing should be impreached for not knowing the law and wasting the people's time.

no...screw that. Upstate gets to be its own state, not long island. You guys keep everything from albany and southeast of there as "New York"...and let the rest of us NOT be suffacated by the high taxes and business unfriendly environment created by the downstate-controlled government officials that YOU vote in and WE have no say in!

This has been attempted before with no avail. I'm sure it will pass by again...

Its not going to happen but I think its fun to kick around. Why should 3 BILLION dollars of our LI taxes go some where else? No wonder our taxes are high!

You might want to tell that to the folks in West Virginia, which prior to the Civil War was part of Virginia.

Or, for an example closer to home:
In 1790, Vermont was created from parts of New York and parts of New Hampshire.
Concerning the part of New York that became part of Vermont:
Cumberland and Gloucester Counties are transferred from New York to Vermont in 1790 in settlement of the New Hampshire land-grant controversy. (Cumberland is created out of Albany County in 1766 and Gloucester is created out of Albany County in 1770.)
These two counties, plus part of Washington County (originally named Charlotte County and created out of Albany County in 1772), subsequently became all or part of the following Vermont Counties: Chittenden, Rutland, Franklin, Benington, etc., etc.
