We are moving from Queens to Glen head and my wife and myself are concerned about the drinking water. We would like to install a filtration system on the main line so the entire home gets clean water. Does anyone have a installer they recommend, which brand and what filter works the best, and what could I expect to pay. I know the water will never be as good as city tap water but I'd like to make it safe for the kids with as little contaminates as possible. Any information would be greatly. Thanks

Call AquaIQ. He pitched us but ultimately we didn't want to spend nearly $4k on water. But it seemed to be a good system.

Does Joe realize that most of Long Island's drinking water comes from deep underground reservoirs called aquifers and the water gets there by filtering down through hundreds of feet of sandy soil while NY City water comes from surface water reservoirs subject to whatever falls into them?

Surprising, NYC's water is considered some of the best Public System Water in the country and from what posters have stated LI's is borderline from being contaminated for life.

Absolutely the case. Even a lilttle reading into the NYC resevoir system and the Catskill watershed will confirm. “Whatever falls onto it” is irrelevant, especially when they carefully monitor the sources.

The main concern was with the “plume.” That starts in bethpage and headed south to the sea. Glen Head wouldn’t be affected either way.

Long Island has many water districts. Some do a better job than others. I’ve lived in areas where the water was heavy with minerals and sediment. I’ve lived in areas without those issues.

The bigger concern IMO is how well the local district filters and what they add. My current water district adds way too much chlorine for my taste. I am also concerned with what else they may add for “my benefit.”

We installed an Aquasana whole house filtration system. Home Depot runs great specials every now and then. To keep the warranty, it must be installed by a licensed plumber. Total cost wasn’t bad for a system that wont need to be touched for several years.

We also have a filter on our shower head. Cooking and drinking water is run through a Brita filter. These aren’t really needed since the whole house filter was installed. (Prior to that, you could easily tell the difference between faucet and filtered). We keep the extra filters out of habit. It can’t hurt.

Water straight from the ground is far better for you, providing it hasn't been contaminated of course.
I do not trust water treatment facilities or the government.
So even with "treated" municipal water, further filtration is a good insurance policy.
Also to get rid of that pool water taste.

Actually NYC water is always rated highly but is very wide open to being compromised because it's just sitting out there in the open. All the nonsense about contaminated drinking water on Long island is just that - nonsense. There may be places where the upper layers have contaminants but our domestic water comes from deeper sources and wells are constantly monitored to meet the very stringent federal requirements.

I second that - and I know first hand because my wife works for the Water Authority. You're actually safer to drink the water coming from your faucet than bottled water because the state requirements are actually more strict.

Don't give in to scare tactics!
