I am moving to a new job in Great Neck, from out of state, and am unfamiliar with the area. I would like to live in a reasonably priced (for the area), one bedroom apartment within walking distance to the LIRR. Ideally, this would be in a neighborhood close to a grocery, dry cleaners, restaurants, and hardware store, because I will not have a car. Where do Long Islanders think I should look? Thanks for any suggestions.
Great Neck is probably the best. They have everything you need. Many apartments next to the LIRR, a lot of stores and a great community. However, a hardware store is north which you will have to take a bus/taxi to get to Ace Hardware. 5 min drive or 20 min walk.
I can't tell you if it's reasonable since I don't know your budget but lowest 1 bedroom rental is $1,900 which is normal in Nassau County.

Are you planning to get a car?
You will want a car on LI. It's tough without one.
Queens is more walkable and there are better public transportation options in general. Most LIers don't use public transit, other than the train to get to the city - but as far as just getting around the island, you will want a car.
Car free living only works if you live/work/play in a subway accessbile area of NYC proper. Great Neck has convenient LIRR access, but I'm telling you right now, your life will be hell without a car, including most parts of Queens.
Would it be cheaper to live in Queens, and head east for work?
Bayside is good which is but you would have to pay like $12(off-peak)-16(peak) for 1 trip to use the LIRR (2 stops to great neck). Bus will be a lot cheaper but will take longer. Cheapest apartment is $1,600 a month but further away from the train station. Apartments going further west (closer to the city) costs a lot more, especially the ones near the subway/buses. It's probably same price as Great Neck.
If you are planning to live alone, I suggest going for a studio in Great Neck.

If you live in Queens, you'll have some City income taxes
