Heating a 1768 square foot colonial for 500-600 gallons per year in Massachusetts. Hot water is heated with an electric hot water heater. Also keep the furnace warm all summer so seals don't shrink. We keep it at 54 at night , bump it up to 64 in the morning, then back down to 54 when we leave. Back up to 64 when we get home and then back down to 54 when we sleep. This year paying between $3.20 to $3.77/ gallon . I use order my oil discount heating website for the lowest price available. We wear lots of clothes and use lots of blankets, and wear socks to bed .

Well, I'm not accepting any overnight stay-overs at your house, way too cold for me.
While your home is relatively small, it is in Massachusetts, which is cold. There also is no way to know how well insulated the home is. How old is it?
Just to let you know, I have a 2,500-3,000 sq ft house on LI that is very well insulated. We keep the temp around 73 when we are home and have the programmable thermostat bring it down to 60 when at work (if never drops that low.) Before we had gas, the annual oil consumption was around 600 gal.
Thus, if you really want to save fuel, invest in insulation.
We are currently using about 2 gallons a day. 1100 square feet, 25F degrees outside and we keep the temp at 65 inside. Our furnace was rated at 89% efficient and our house is considered tight. Is our consumption normal?

for this time of the year , yes. we have a 1200 square foot home and use about 700 gallons a year, but from April to November we only burn about one gallon a day. We have auto thermostat that varies between 62-68 degrees. If you have a large family , that can affect usage also (hot water usage, showers etc)

How did you conclude that it was "tight?" You need to measure the insulation thickness in walls, ceilings and attics. You also should abate any drafts with insulating foam.
My home (post#25) was much larger and kept warmer, yet used about the same amount of oil.
what temperature do you all keep your homes set at? I like to be comfortable. My home is approx 1600 square foot cape with original 1956 windows & doors down stairs (gutted upstairs & replaced windows 2 years ago) Furnace is about 25 years old, I'm in NH and spend about $3,500.00 - $4,000.00 a year for heat & hot water. I keep the thermostat set at 66 at night and 68-70 during the day. Hopefully once I gut the downstairs & replace the furnace, that will go down.
We have a 1968 square foot home. 3 zones kept no more than 68 degrees. And at night around 60. We have Dr Energy Savers Silverglo in the attic and pretty well insulated. We use about 550- 600 gallons the whole year. We have a Bordelus boiler regularly maintained and all the pipes are also insulated even in the walls. Hot water is heated by the boiler and sent to a standby tank.
