Looking at a house with approximately 1500 square feet, 8 rooms, expanded cape. new windows, 3 heating zones, built in 1955. Oil for heat and hot water. I am in the process of obtaining the current owners usage, but would like to know what the average home uses in gallons of oil per year.
There are a lot of varying factors, where you keep the temp, insulation, etc ... I have a cape a little bigger then yours and use approx 700-900 gal depnding on climate in winter.

It's well insulated, and we like to keep it on the cool side.
depending on the TYPE of furnace (capacity, age, effiency, and careed for) , how much insulation (wall, basement/crawl/or slab, and windows(60% of heat/cool is lost through the windows), YOUR 'comfort zone", and the temps (Long island is 'warmed' by the ocean but can get some very cold weather sometimes) will detremine how much you will use.
when I lived there it was between 800-1000 per year ( one really cold year was closer to 1100) with oil furnace and hot water
based on that with home heating oil costing AROUND $4/gallon you can expect a yearly heating cost of 4000 or 333/a month
1800 sq ft expanded cape. Found that the dormers had no insulation in the spring. Used about 800 gal last winter. Wasn't fuel like $3 a gal last year on avg?
Expect that to go down with the new insulation and pellet stove :-)
I have a 2,500-3,000 sq ft high ranch and use about 750 gallons of oil per year. The house is very well insulated (at least R-30 in the attic) and at least R-15 in the walls.
