Hi all,
I got the letter (add) in the mail from Property Tax Reduction Consultants (PTRC). Has anyone here used them? Are they legit? (I have read they got into minor trouble years ago from inflating how much they could save and how much they were charging) Looking at the letter, it seems they have changed their ways...who knows?

Many thanks,
Brian

Mark Lewis charges nothing if he doesn't win. I used him two years ago and won to the tune of $1300 & I plan to have him try again for in 2009.

Does Mark Lewis only work in Suffolk or does he handle Nassau as well?

Thanks for the replies.
This place doesn't charge you either but they do charge you 1/2 of whatever they get you lowered by. So in KellyFG's example, it would cost $650.

Please make sure you read the fine print carefully. I haven't seen this particular company's ad, so I'm not familiar with it, but some of these companies charge you for the filing fee and some also for the appraisal if they don't win.

Of course the 50% fee is only due for the first year; thereafter you pocket the entire savings.

Personally, I did my own grievance two years ago; got a decent reduction, but not as much as I felt I was entitled to and will do it again this year.

what happens when you do a grievance? Do they send someone out to look at your lot and house? what if they say that you should be paying more that what you should? what determines the lowering of taxes?

We also used Mark Lewis about 8 years ago. They sent out an appraiser to look at the lot & house. When she went to the bottom of the basement stairs my husband told her it was where we keep the cats & that it was infested with fleas. She thanked us & didn't go further!

Since then the basement has been finished with a media room, 4th bedroom etc. & we put in CAC.

You don't want to show an outdoor shed on a concrete slab either.

Worked for us to get it done before the improvements I mentioned!

Please keep in mind that even if one of these grievance companies turns you down, you can still apply on your own.

Based on my personal experience, they seem to have a minimum amount for the reduction to make it worthwhile for them. Let's say you can get a reduction worth $450/yr, it would make it worth your while, but they may not want to do the work for $225... I have no idea what they would consider a minimum, or if they all use the same guidelines, just using that as an example.

I contacted Attorney Elizabeth Roche. I've been disappointed so far. I contacted her in February, and still have no word. My taxes have also increased by about 20%. I'm really angry.
