i saw a chipmunk running across the street once, last year in setauket. only time ive ever seen one
I used to have chipmunks. They'd gather the seed that fell from the bird feeder and then disappear under the fence. That was before my neighbor got so many cats. Now there's no more chipmunk and I've stopped feeding the birds this past summer.
Parts of Suffolk and scattered areas of Nassau are loaded with Chipmunks.
My accountant lives in Dix Hills, he's obsessed with them. They drive him crazy.
Even though they don't do anything wrong.
He's like Bill Murray in Caddyshack with the gopher.
I'm trying to figure out what kind of yellow bird on LI makes a hive like nest and I'm drawing a blank. What's the bird look like? Is the size of a Cardinal or something smaller, like a sparrow? Is it a perching bird or a tree-clinging bird, like a woodpecker? Inquiring minds would like to know!
Its maybe a tad bigger then a sparrow. Its small. It enters from the side as opposed to having a round nest. It hangs off the branch.

When I lived in Cold Spring Harbor (near the Nature Conservancy), we had tons of chipmunks. They look soooo cute, with their little tail standing up straight when they're running... unfortunately I could never get very close. Late morning was the best time to see them scurrying down the street and across properties.
There were also wild pheasants and the occasional red fox, in addition to the regular critters, i.e. raccoons, squirrels, wild rabbits and lots of different birds - miss all of that...
