My husband was recently offered a position in Bridgeport, Ct. He is contemplating commuting there while we figure out things (moving, etc). Has anyone done this commute? Did you drive? or take the ferry? How long? How was traffic, etc? We aren't thinking of this as a long term solution, but want to figure out if it's doable in the short-term. Thanks for any info!
I have taken the ferry and driven that route many times. I think you could mix it up with driving occcasionally on 'lighter' traffic days. If traffic isnt crazy (depending on when you leave here in the AM) you can make it there faster than taking the boat but the boat provides a break from driving obviously. Taking your car over is like $45 each way, I am not sure how much it is for just a passenger.

$25 round trip on foot (same day). They have a monthly pass for $215...which is a real savings if you do it every day.
Its $51 each way for a car/driver but I think a round trip on the same day is a few bucks less.
Plainview to the PJ Ferry terminal is prob 45 min?
wow $215 is less than what I pay a month for the LIRR!
BTW, doesn't the ferry bring you to New London? How far is that from Bridgeport? You can't get the ferries from Nassau though so you still have to get it from out east. I remember going from Orient Point...there must be a closer one though. That would be one heck of a drive.

There are 2 ferries, one between Orient Point and New London and another between Bridgeport and Pt. Jefferson. I think the former (Orient - NL) doesn't operate in the winter, but I may be wrong.
I would have to start taking drugs if I had that commute.
No matter how you slice it, it's a wash.
I would drive. Too much B.S. involved with the Ferry, plus the money.
Leave at 3 or 4am for work. Traffic is less hideous.
Ugh...just the thought of that commute is making my skin crawl.
If the job is the be-all end-all, moving is the best bet.

No its year round....and plenty busy thanks to the Casinos.
The ferry takes like an hour and fifteen right? Plus add on the extra time you will have to spend getting there, parking, loading and unloading, etc. It's not going to be pleasant.
My husband was going from Queens to Greenwich this summer for a project. He wasn't doing it everyday, only 2 days a week but it was a real pain. Traffic in CT is no joke even going in reverse and you have tolls as an added cost. They wanted him to keep doing it but it was too much.
Plainview to Bridgeport is even farther and he would be doing it 5 days a week? I'd look into moving if it's a solid offer. COL is reasonable if you're out past Bridgeport but the traffic can be crazy.
