I'm a mature woman looking to move to within a 20-minute drive to Huntington. I like the idea of a townhouse. Any suggestions on towns where I might get a 2 BR, built in the 1980's or later, for $500K or less? Ideally I'd like a town with a town center, but I don't know if I'll find that in this price range. Also, I will be commuting to NYC for another 5-6 years in all likelihood. Thanks.
CMP11, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography:
What people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".
Also, many colloquially refer to a "downtown business district" in a hamlet as a "village".
You can get a fact sheet for any city, village or hamlet on Long Island by going here American FactFinder and input the name of the city, village or hamlet for "city/town" (leave out the ZIP Code) and New York for "State", and then click "GO".
You'll get a lot of demographic, and some economic, statistics for the city, village or hamlet you selected, and if you click on "Reference map" (it's on the right hand side), you'll get a map.
When you do find a townhouse that you like, you can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) that townhouse is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)

While supply is limited in that price range and the area you're talking about, right now there are two (one is really nice!)
CMP11 - there is a two-story condo up for sale right off of High Street in a small enclave of condos (think like 25 in total) in Huntington Village. I think it's in the mid $500's, but you can probably get them down at least 5%. Those condos were built about 30 years ago. They're in good shape and well kept from the outside, and are walking distance to downtown. Definitely take a look - it may be just what you're looking for.

AndreaII, you're probably talking about High Oak Ct - none are currently available; the last one for sale was withdrawn in November...
Elke, if you mean the two on Victoria Court, they're asking well over $500K, and have not come down much for many months. I'll keep looking.
