So how rich do you have to be to live on the North Shore? Are there apartments or condos that are affordable for the upper middle class? Smaller houses that can still be purchased without a Ft. Knox bank account?

It's tough to generalize like this. The North Shore has some crappy towns like Glen Cove and Huntington Station. And, the South Shore has some spectacular harbor towns where the homes are well over a million or more. It all depends on the particular location.
North Shore. I've never heard of anyone being impressed that someone lives on the South Shore. And that's fine - people live on either shore for a variety of reasons, but s. shore wealth tends to be more working class. People who will pay $1.5 mil for a house and still park a boat in the driveway. As pp said, north shore kids do look down (or did, back in the day) on s. shore kids. I don't know anyone who would include the Hamptons in any discussion of the south shore. It's an entirely different entity unto itself.
The North Shore wasn't nicknamed "The Gold Coast" for nothing. Going back a century, there was more old money on the North Shore with one or two magnates owning land on the South Shore. IMHO it's that impression which has remained.
Many folks have indicated 'The Hamptons' forgetting that not all of the Hamptons are exclusive. There are some low-brow areas of Southampton, Hampton Bays does not have the cachet of East Hampton or Bridgehampton. Also, once venturing out in that direction, it's North Fork vs South Fork.
Once out there, south of the highway designates a more monied locale.
Either way you slice it, there are some great locations on either shore.
azzurrony, what south shore harbor towns are you writing about? Most south shore towns are bayfront, or have river access.
Very rich. In many cases the annual property tax is greater than most LI'ers earn in a year.

In many of these exclusive minimum 3-to-5 acre sized property villages, there are no apartments or condos and neither are there smaller houses, unless it is part of the estate and it's where the some of the staff, oftentimes the chauffeur, may be living.
I agree with the "gold coast" part of the north shore being most prestigous. But once you get past Lyod Harbor it fades away. You start to get into prices that are "affordable" compared to Sands Point and Lattington. Then once you hit Mt. Sinai eastward its not even close to the "Gold Coast" of Nassau County.

Yes, you can find smaller homes in or around many of the more exclusive North Shore communities such as Lattingtown or Cold Spring Harbor for 600K - 1.5M (squarely in the upper middle class price range for LI).

That is true.
I do agree the Gatsby Vibe exits at Belle Terre then transitions out to the NoFo. There are a few breaks in the Gold Coast Chain in Western Suffolk too.
Waterfront homes are certainly humbler in NE Brookhaven and Riverhead.
They are by no means a minor accomplishment, some are breathtakingly ornate ...even palatial.
Generally speaking if you're on the Sound anywhere on LI....youre probably not struggling.
