It's cheap for a reason.

Sure you get the four seasons: Humidity, Snow, Road Construction, and Rain
You have a career working at AM/PM

Things you won't hear someone say in the midwest:
  • Honey, did you mail that donation to Greenpeace?
  • We're vegetarians.
  • Honey, these bonsai trees need watering?
  • Give me the small bag of pork rinds.
  • Deer heads detract from the decor.
  • Spitting is such a nasty habit.
  • I just couldn't find a thing at Wal-Mart today.
  • Trim the fat off that steak.
  • Cappuccino tastes better than espresso.
  • I'll have the arugula and radicchio salad.
  • Unsweetened tea tastes better.
  • Would you like your fish poached or broiled?
  • My fiancee is registered at Tiffany's.
  • I've got two cases of Zima for the Super Bowl.
  • Little Debbie snack cakes have too many fat grams.
  • Checkmate.
  • She's too old to be wearing that bikini.
  • Does the salad bar have bean sprouts?
  • I don't have a favorite college team.
  • I believe you cooked those green beans too long.
  • Those shorts ought to be a little longer, Darla.

Default I did

Grew up in Los Angeles area, now live in Chicago. Chicago is the midwest, and has a beautiful downtown, great neighborhoods, nice suburbs full of custom unique homes, so different than cookie cutter LA, culture, sports teams etc. Still love LA, but not really a sacrifice relocating here. So many stereotypical comments on this thread; there are far more backwards places in CA than many places in the midwest. As far as Ohio goes, however, NOT a big fan of that state............nor of most of Indiana. To each his own. I find that the midwest exported most of its misfits and malcontents to CA and AZ, leaving mostly content and happy people here ( but also still has the malcontents who cannot leave ).

Thats funny, people in Chicago, especially downtown and in the north and west suburbs, consider people from Marrietta hicks who live in the least desireable area of the country. What a coincidence!

Hopefully, they won't try Zima. That stuff is terrible. I can think of so many better beverages. When I was visiting Minnesota in 2005, there was plenty of coffee, espresso, cappuccino and several that were not named Starbucks (at least two other local chains thrive there and independents, too).

Anyway, it is great that you had time to think up this list while stuck in a two hour LA traffic jam. Some of these may still apply to some very small towns not obsesses with being trendy.

California may have more glamorous towns (and those tend to be pricy), but also more backwards and or dangerous/troubled towns (Barstow, Needles, Stockton...2nd largest bankrupt city in USA, Compton, Inglewood, South Central LA area and the list could go on). Thanks for sharing. I like things about both California and Minnesota where I grew up. Chicago has its plusses, too.

Last I had checked, AM/PM was only a west coast thing (we don't have any here ).

They have expanded into the Midwest as of 2008.

I am now quite disappointed that I didn't see one in Chicago in 2012.

My third goal in my long-term financial plan is to buy a cheap house in the Midwest to have to go on sabbatical to.

I have absolutely nothing against the Midwest, even when you factor in that I grew up a whopping 27.7 miles from the Pacific Ocean in So Cal.

From my trips to the Midwest, I've learned:
-Chicago will blow your mind
-Milwaukee can be a fun place/has nice people
-There really are abandoned houses and lots just a few yards away from the Jackson Family home in Gary, IN.
-Lake Michigan on a summer day isn't the worst thing that could happen to a person
-Kansas City is an awesome town
-Grand Island, NE completely sucks. But it does have a demographical surprise.

Anyone from the north or west suburbs considering Murrieta to be "hick" is ignorant, and is the pot calling the kettle black. Does anyone from Chicago who has even heard of Murrieta realize that the median family income is ?90,000??

Grew up in Chicago suburbs, now live in LA, and we are the complete opposite. I agree that Chicago has a downtown that can blow one away, but beyond that, its social life opportunities are seriously limited if one is not a Big Ten, frat-guy who gets drunk at Cubs game. I know thats an unfair exaggeration, but the segregation basically limits the neighborhoods of Chicago that fit me at all to just a couple very small areas.

Agreed about some of the suburbs like Oak Park - it is gorgeous, I lived there, and love going back to visit. But LA - cookie cutter?? Whats your basis for this. LA has way more variety than just about any other city.

Why rag on Ohio? Have you been to Columbus, Cleveland, or Cincinnati? They do have a lot of similar cool things as Chicago, just on a smaller scale.

I'm very happy in Southern California and feel like its where I belong. And I go home to visit family and friends in Chicagoland the same way that someone goes home to St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Kansas City etc. to visit.
