My friend and I were planning on travelling to LA from Austin next week, but we’re reconsidering due to the recent weather. We’d be in Las Vegas by the 28th, and in LA by the 29th. We are planning on driving through LA, then down Highway 1 to Costa Mesa, where we’d spend the night.

Being from Texas, we are ignorant in regards to mudslides, and this is our main concern. I’ve checked several weather related websites, and all agree that it should be sunny by next week, but we’re still concerned about the road conditions. Considering the amount of rain Southern California has received, are mudslides a possibility next week, and if so, should we postpone our trip? (We're two females in our mid 20's, and this is our first road trip, so we don't want to take any unnecessary risks.) Any other advice to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Kari

mudslides are only issues in remote areas of the moutains and foothills as well as some parts of PCH (highway 1) in Malibu. the part of PCH that you mentioned above is quite urban and not all that scenic to be honest, you'd be better taking the 405 from LA to costa mesa.

There have been mudslides in Orange County, but it seems like they are mostly south of Costa Mesa. You should be fine. Just be sure to have a good GPS in your car for alternate routes if you decide to venture into South County. Still, I doubt that there will be any mudslides even there once the weather lets up.

A mudslide closed down the on-ramp lane from the 10 freeway in Pomona to the 210 freeway yesterday. And there are problems with water ponding on many of the freeways in southern California. But the storm is finally ending tonight and actually moving into Texas later in the week. By the time you arrive the worst will be over by a week. Laguna Beach is still a mess but that should be all cleaned up by next week also. The roads should not be an issue.

Kari, unless another storm hits which isn't predicted at this time, you will be fine by next week. These things have a way of leaving just as fast as they arrive. have a good and safe trip.
