The big question is, do you have a car?

If you have a car, you can go to the Santa Monica Pier, downtown Santa Monica, Rodeo Drive, Universal Studios, Hollywood Walk of Fame (near the Chinese theater plus a ton other Hollywood spots), the zoo.

Without a car, I'm actually not sure of the transportation logistics from Disney to LA. Once you are in LA, you can take the Santa Monica Blue Bus which starts in Santa Monica and hits all the tourist spots. http://www.bigbluebus.com/home/index.asp

Locals in LA tend to frequent the same spots as the tourists, unlike in NYC. There's all the famous Hollywood restaurants, but not sure how kid friendly they are.

What kind of food do you want to eat? That'll make it easier to say a few places.

Kid friendly + alcohol makes it tough to narrow it down.

My suggestions are:

Hot dogs: For LA style, Pinks in Hollywood. If you want a real hot dog, on your way from Anaheim to LA, go to Portillo's in Buena Park (Portillo's is a Chicago based chain with 2 locations in LA).

Pizza: California Pizza Kitchen for LA style, pretty much located everywhere. For NY pizza, I recommend for tourists Enzo's in Westwood or Vito's on La Cienega in West Hollywood.

Mexican: There are tons of them. One place that you can drink alcohol and is family friendly is Gloria's Mexican Cafe in Culver City. It has been on the Food Network on Diner's Drive In's and Dives with Guy Fieri and is excellent.

Downtown Santa Monica (Promenade) has a ton of restaurants.

Most of the steakhouses in LA are expensive and chains. Not sure if that is what you want.
