At work today we had this conversation.Do you think that moron rappers like Dr Dre,Eminem and his homies encourage kids to think that gang life is cool.Do you think that some young kids are led into the gang life by the stupidity being played on commercial radio.I have noticed kids in Malibu dressing ghetto with tupac shirts and doo rags and I know that some of their parents are millionaires. Why would a kid want to immitate the poorest members of our society. When I was a kid I wanted to be shortstop for the Yankees not a thug who just got out on ten of a twenty year sentence.

when the **** does Eminem promote gangs in his music? if anything, he's totally against it. I don't think he was ever in a gang.

Let's see, Shawn Corey Carter aka "Jay-Z" has a net worth of at least $340 million, Sean John Combs aka "Diddy" has a net worth of approximately $346 million, and Russell Simmons has a net worth of approximately $325 million, and Curtis James Jackson III aka "50 Cent" is worth at least $100 million. While Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is paid over $21 million per year, the money that the so-called "moron rappers" make isn't too bad.

I'm sure that most of those so-called "moron rappers" can afford good lawyers to prevent or shorten any jail time that they might receive.

While "hip-hop" and rap music are influenced by gang life, it's probably more of a "fashion statement" than a "recruiting tool." Most kids wearing 2Pac T-shirts and "doo-rags" are doing it because they think it's "cool", not because they're members of the Bloods or Crips. Back in the 1950s, some folks probably wondered why kids were trying to imitate some poor hick from Tupelo, Mississippi named Elvis Presley.

Here's a link to an article about the richest folks in "hip-hop"...

Why are you posting this in the LA forum? What about "Eastside" rappers?

Why is this "Los Angele's problem?"

No more than acid rock, metal, and punk rock promote death, blood, and torture.

I have to believe what the police chief here in LA said:

A gang is a group of people who like to hang out. We probably all hung out with gangs when we were kids. This isn't an age thing. We all had friends that we hung around with. Any group (2 or more people) is a gang.

You can't stop people from hanging out with each other.

Trying to stop *violent* gangs is a different story. Most gangs aren't out there to commit violence. Only a few are. Those are the ones you want to stop.

As far as dress goes -- who cares? So the music catches on and the fashion -- that's not a big deal. A lot of kids relate this type of fashion to break dancing. The gang lifestyle has a lot more to it than fashion and posing.

As stupid as this might sound, Snoop Doggy Dog is a very good BUSINESSMAN!! He's made a fortune and he's not stupid! Neither are some of the other rappers so you can't just look at all of them and say: "No good." 00

If your kid asks you for an AK-47 for Christmas, I'd worry!!

Most definitely, music that glamourizes gangs can influence kids to gang bang especially when these artists become their role models. It is important that kids have guidance at home that teach them right from wrong, become good citizens and take music for just music and nothing else.

As far as the dressing goes, this is a whole separate thing. It is a hip-hop culture right now and that's just the style at the moment.
