Amazing as in that he lasted so long or that it was not long enough before he quit?

Either way, I think it's good experience because it was a major national firm.

Also Rice University is top 20 in the nation. How in the heck can he not land a frickin' bookstore job? A video shop? You'd think they would trust him to do some average tasks like stocking and being a cashier.

I could see a potential employer looking at someone like your brother and saying "why does this guy want this job"? Even if he is applying for an easy job some training/paperwork would be required and an employer probably wouldn't want to go through that again when your brother moves on.

Additionally, while Rice is certainly a great university I don't think the name would have much cachet with the people he is looking to get hired by.

That's what I was thinking too. Employers might look at him as though this is really temp for him and he will leave the second he finds a better job or better pay.

Also, Rice might be mostly well known among those who know about good universities. I am sure to some it's just another school.

Gee, after reading all this I wonder what my chances are of finding a full-time job! And I have very little experience. It seems some people are only willing to do certain jobs, though. If you went to college and all that, then I don't blame you.

I think your brother's strategy is flawed. He should be looking for full-time employment first and then work on earning his master's degree during nights/weekends while his employer pays for it. That masters degree won't do very much for him in terms of finding a job/career. It won't get him a higher starting pay out of the gate. It will just be an expensive piece of paper at this point. If I was an employer this would be a big red flag to me.

I think a lot of younger people are delusional. A piece of paper doesn't get you a job out of college. Ask yourself "What skills do I bring to this company?" "People skills" don't count. If you can't name any skills or experience then you wasted your time at college and are no different than a high school grad in terms of value on paper these days.

Bounty, you're talking about a business degree or finance, engineering, etc.

This is poli sci and he is mostly interning and doing work for local area politicians and attending events in order to get his foot through the door. For that he needs a flexible job, not a full time job that he has no interest in.

Most of anything involving public policy and city work is voluntary/no pay.

Flexable..oh. If he wants to set his own hours that may be a problem for some employers who want someone only part time but regular.

I have no more advice but sometimes you can't do what you want becasue of your situation. Good luck to you guys.

This makes a lot more sense. I had a friend doing the same thing - I understand now.

Strange "out there" idea. Has he considered washing windows or cleaning gutters on the weekends? Basically, working for himself?
