For being the city it's all recorded in, the radio formats sure suck here. There is no rock or hard rock station, I have to rely on Sirius Octane channel, or Pandora. And please don't say KROQ, that's an alternative joke.

Here's an example of a renowned rock station's playlist

http://kxxr.tunegenie.com/Over in Vegas, KOMP is pretty good. Phoenix has a good one too

Playlist - 98 KUPD - Arizona's Real Rock

Palm Springs is good, I tune in when I'm past Yucaipa and it comes in

93.7 KCLB

Even up past Santa Barbara, SLO has a good station

Home - New Rock 107.3 - KURQ-FM

What's up Los Angeles? Where is the \m/ at???

Looked at the Arizona playlist, essentially all oldies by now. That era of rock is dead (with the exception of an underground scene here and there). It has morphed into what you call alternative, with the transition being in the late 90's, early 2000's. No going back now.

OP, you live directly under the airwaves for 96.7 KCAL.

If you don't like that, you won't like anything.

Real rock stations? LA has two KLOS and The Sound.

There is also Jack FM and K-EARTH 101 -- but K-EARTH has become very 80's formatted as of late

David Aguilar, I like KCAL, but they don't have a large coverage area and they play no current hits

Those are classic rock. According to some ratings website I saw once, Los Angeles has the largest population of metal heads in the country, and the area supports concerts such as MayhemFest and others quite well. I say the radio market is there if someone taps it.

Use Tune-In to get the stations you like from Phoenix and Las Vegas.

I agree that KCAL doesn't play that many current hits, but I'm okay with that.

I've long bitched about LA radio sucking, since KNAC 105.5 went off the air yrs ago. Kroq is ok. But you're right, just straight ahead hard hard rock, there isn't anything.

I listen to Sirrus most of time at home. During the commute, I just listen to talk radio or suffer through with KLOS or 100.3.... but they don't play stuff like Octane, or Ozzy's boneyard.

I find all of the ads just too tedious to listen to as well... another plus for satellite radio.

98.7 is probably the closest you will get. At least it's better than KROQ.

Unfortunately, at this point mobile networks are rarely sufficiently robust to stream radio to a moving car, and for many of us it's when we're driving that we most want to crank it up.

But if you think L.A.'s bad, you should see San Diego. We don't even have a classic rock station here.
