I was invited to a network event out there and I was wondering if the long haul was worth it? I really want to visit a new place but if the event turns out to be a bust then what is there to do there? Anything you guys recommend?

Tidepools. Nelson's at Terranea. That's about it.

It's worth the trip to see what a well managed city looks like, that does not have a city council that robs the taxpayers blind and lets the infrastructure crumble.

Please. It once had the highest per capita income zip code in the nation. Not every chuck of land can used to exlain civic management equally.

So it's a nice area? Is it LA County?

My friend's mom lives up there. It's a very upscale area, a slice of old-money in new-money LA. I've heard it has a strong religious element (that would up w/ friend's mom, who is strict Protestant). Beautiful area, though not sure it'll be fun if the event goes bust. In that case head to the Beach Cities (Manhattan/Hermosa/Redondo).

Yes LA County. It is west (seems like north, but not) of Long Beach and San Pedro.

On a nice day, it offers spectacular views. It's sort of like orange county (the cleanliness and maintenance) meets....Malibu or something. But not much shopping. Its mostly residential.

Definitely worth it. There's hiking there too (limited) if you like that.

PV is actually pretty big so it depends on where you are headed. It is nice there, but it is also quite sleepy as others have mentioned. Also, the areas without ocean views are anything but spectacular, just your typical hillside suburbs of LA. The south bay beach cities are nearby so you could always head that way if your help event sucks.

There's some cliffside park on the coast there with some pretty cool views and a trail down to a nifty little beach.
