As far as prostitution in KTown, you're right it's mainly on Western around Melrose-SMB, however there's also some by my way on the eastern edge of Ktown @ Hoover & 7th. It's all transvestites associated with the traffic from the bar nearby. The track only seems to get going on weekends though.
Plenty of prostitution on Western as far south as 3rd, also plenty of hookers on Beverly and the side streets around Beverly and Western.
