The I-405 Freeway through Los Angeles serves an estimated 379,000 vehicles per day, once again making it the busiest interstate freeway in the country, according to a report released by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration.

The report also shows people drove more than 84.7 billion miles on California highways in 2011 – more than 900 times the distance from Earth to the Sun – making the Golden State’s highways the nation’s busiest.

No surprise here, took me 110 minutes once to commute from LAX/El Segundo to Woodland Hills on a Friday afternoon.

Is it the busiest freeway from where it starts to where it ends (Sylmar to Orange County)? Or are they just referring specifically to the Sepulveda Pass?

The article above mentions the Sepulveda Pass specifically. The Sylmar end is pretty quiet compared with the Sepulveda Pass.

As busy as it can get, I'm always so surprised to go from Culver City to Carson on it without much traffic in the morning and then back up in the afternoon without much traffic. It seems like very few parts of LA county have any sort of anti-commute. Let's hope it stays that way!

You are going against traffic. Lucky you! From Carson to CC in the morning is brutal and the commute from CC to the South Bay in the afternoon is just as bad.

Is it really the busiest? I've always thought I-5 was or the 101 through downtown. Always assumed the 405 just receives more press cause that's where the wealthy live but wasn't the busiest in terms of numbers.

For many years it was the Ventura but the San Diego overtook it and has been #1 ever since.

Yes! I think it is one of the few stretches in LA that has any sort of anti commute. Even north of there or south through Long Beach it can usually be jammed both ways!
