Oh I'm fine, except for the cracked corners. I go through a lot of Badger Balm during those events. So far this year, nada.

And one new roof.

Oh, fun update: last night, our air conditioning went out.

And it's Labor Day so nobody is calling us back...

Last night was...interesting. Kind of like sleeping in the devil's crotch inside the bowels of hell. I slept on the floor in front of a fan. The kids slept underneath an open window in our bed, with a fan on them. My husband was in the guest bedroom.

We all smell.

Don't come over to our house.

Last night was a no-aircon night here because it actually cooled down to 72, allowing me to pull the cooler air through the house. My electric bill appreciated that.

My electric usage for yesterday was fantastic. I mean it did come with the teensy price of pretty much dying all day and night, but...I have to say we've been struggling with the bill all summer. (We never turn on our AC until the evening and if we can do without, we do.) What's your opinion on installing two air conditioners instead of using central air, Fontucky? Do you think there would be an energy savings? We have a very small house (1000 sq. ft.).

I'd love an opinion on this, it's something I've been thinking about. We do have a swamp cooler, it basically does nothing.

I've never had central air. In fact, coming from South OC, I've never had a house with any type of aircon, even when I lived in the canyons of the Santa Ana Mts. This house (1500 sq ft) has two wall-mounted Amana AC units. I use the one in the front room and keep the rest of the house closed off, except for the den where I now sit. This old place features a swinging door to the kitchen, which helps greatly to keep it cool in here.

This latest heat wave has been monsoonal, so the swamp cooler is useless. An ideal set up would include both evap cooling and aircon.

This has been brutal. I don't have central A/C and sometimes have had trouble sleeping. I'm familiar with heat waves, but this one seems to have both unusually high humidity and unusually high evening temperatures. Nothing like it in years, I believe.

Yes, it's pretty bad. And for us...last Saturday, our air compressor blew! So we've had NOTHING (no central, and we didn't have unit air conditioners). Just a lot of fans...

Have two ACs on order...every store we went to was completely out of stock...we weren't really all that surprised. "Fixing" the central isn't a possibility for us right now. The compressor by itself will be $2000, give or take, and apparently the rest of the system isn't great, so it might entail more fixes later -- or as suggested, an entire revamp for like $6000...nope, not happening this summer, I can tell you that much.

Just gotta hang in there, I guess...I don't see an end in sight for at least a couple of weeks, no weather station that I know of even speculates beyond that point. Thank you for pointing out the humidity factor, I feel like such a whiner, but this really is pretty soul-sapping, LOL.

Just gotta hang on...October WILL come!

That's what we'll be using -- two window units. Perhaps it will be cheaper that way, anyway. We shall see!

On Sept 15 last year it was 102 degrees in L.A. Maybe we should count our blessings...

It was 102 here just last week. (shrug) One week difference does not a blessing make. (IMO)
