I was kind of shocked to see the females on the local news stations wearing spaghetti strap tops, low cut tops, very tight fitting dresses, or just that barbie doll look. Some, not all but enough to notice. Never saw this in DC, Seattle or New York.

No transplant, I live in NYC metro area but travel a lot domestically. I was shocked and surprised by it too and that was years ago when I first spent enough time in LA to actually sit and watch the news. The women anchors and women weather reporters, on the local stations, were dressed over-sexualized. They were dressed as if they were going to a club, bar, or auditioning to be a "professional dancer", to put it nicely. One was giving the weather report and she literally seemed to giggle as she switched her body from one side of the weather map to the other side in front of the camera in her low-cut, cleavage hugging, hips hugging, tight fitted-tank dress. If it was very oft-putting and demeaned what they were supposed to be doing which was to present the latest news and weather professionally and in a credible manner. Presentation is important (how we dress, speak, conduct ourselves in public). It was clear to me that their main focus was not on doing their job but to "catch". Another thing I noticed was although it was an English-speaking network, the women looked to be predominately Hispanic and age range of mid-twenties to early 30 something.

I haven't really sat down and watched the local news in maybe 15 years.

They're just eye candy. It's not like they're doing any forecasting or scientific work. Does presenting the weather really require anything else besides huge "weather balloons?"

I think a good portion of Angelenos don't sit down and watch the news (preferring online sources), so this is done for ratings. It started with the Spanish language stations and then Fox 11 news and from there it has spread to other stations. The afternoon broadcasts that older people watch tend to be a little more conservative.

Not long ago, I actually wrote to the news director of channel 9 news, and told him they had better get a new makeup artist because the female anchor on weekends looked like a hooker with her inch long eyelashes and heavy makeup.
It reminded me of the late Tammy Baker.
They must have got the message because the same female now looks damm pretty, and natural looking.
Bob.

When I lived in LA, I always noticed this, but found that I watched the news a lot longer when I lived in LA than here in the Bay Area (where the female newscasters are more conservative looking).

It worked! It kept a male (me) watching for a long time!

Definitely agree with this. Even other warm weather areas (San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Florida, etc.) don't follow this trend as much as LA.
