I work in Pasadena, have two small dogs and would like to find a place to live with a community vibe, restaurants, a coffee shop nearby...would love to have a great view of DTLA (gotta love those twinkly lights at night). I'd like to keep the rent to around $1700. I'm willing to commute and have even explored living downtown but seem at a loss for where to start to find something that's in a good location for someone single in their mid-40's.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

High up in the hills of la crescenta or Altadena will give you views of dtla and are cheaper rent.

La Crescenta is a good suggestion. Easy 15 minute commute to Pasadena, views of downtown (and even the ocean if you're high enough and near a road like Ocean View), and plenty of parks to take your dog to (Crescenta Valley Park has an off leash area, and Deukmejian, Dunsmore, Two Strike, Montrose and others allow them on leashes). You can rent a house w/yard for $1700.
