lol

see this is what happens all over LA in poorer neighborhoods. There is just a higher percentage of people that aren't civilized.

I live near there. Nothing special or all that great. Nothing really bad. You'd be worse off on Vanowen to the east or west. But its not that great either. Its got one bonus and thats a one block walk to the Fresh and Easy at Vanowen and Sepulveda. Just don't get hassled by the pimps running their "ladies" out there.

Default What's "wrong" with Van Nuys is a matter of perspective....

I used to live in the mid-Wilshire area. I saved a ton by moving to Van Nuys, where for less money I now have an apartment that's twice as big (two bedroom, two full bath) and gained my own off-street parking space (HUGE plus) and a pool. I pay 1050 for this. I live right near Woodley/Lake Balboa park which is gigantic and gorgeous, so I get to ride my bike on the bike path and jog (in the cooler months) and lounge around in the park. I have never felt unsafe here, and I am a petite young woman. Yeah, it can be kind of noisy with the street vendors selling ice cream and corn treats for the kiddies. Yeah, the back alley behind my building has tagging and trash. Yeah, most of my neighbors are Hispanic (I'm white). I can't speak for everyone in Van Nuys (there are certainly some crappy areas) but my neighbors are nice middle-class Mexican-American families who are friendly to me, and their kids are out happily playing all the time. I don't get what the big deal is about the area having a lot of Hispanics; this sounds like ignorance and bigotry to me. Moving to the Valley has been great for my budget and lifestyle -- I'm a freelance writer and my meager pay goes so much further here. Granted, it's not as posh or manicured as Burbank but it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

Yes. Burbank and Studio City are better choices. I've lived in both cities and loved it.

I'd pick another area. I grew up in the Valley about ten minutes from there.
