TBH, I was more referring to the hole-in-the-wall store.
And reading your last message doesn't really attract me to the Portos place. Waiting in line just drives me crazy...and there are more than enough lines here in LA. I just want plain, simple bread, not some fashionable high-street designer bread art product!

There's always the Alpine Market in Torrance. Google it. My fiancee is Austrian and we make it a regular trip to go there for bread.

Good point! I was already in Torrance for Japanese food (my wife is Japanese). It was worth the drive, but I then found the same stuff in Little Tokyo.
But I'll first try the closer-to-home options before I travel to Torrance again for bread.

How about Panera? They sell bread. Look them up online and search to find a location nearby.

If you are coming down to Torrance try St. Moritz bakery in Lomita (25604 Narbonne Ave) they have a hearty dark rye that is terrific and I think it certainly qualifies as hole in the wall
You can also catch them at the Torrance Farmers market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings.

Thank you all!
It's amazing that you have to travel miles and miles for a loaf of bread while (fortunately) getting excellent sushi at dozens of places around the corner. That's definitely much better than in Germany, which is a desert in that respect.

Hi LuckyGem,

My wife went to Panera today and found just the stuff I was looking for. A ton of thanks for the excellent hint!

There is also a German deli on San Fernando Road near Sonora. They might have German bread. Also, there is a deli on Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank (either Monte Carlo or Pinnochio -- it's a restaurant too) and I think they carry breads.
