Today I went on a bike ride all through L.A. and did some exploring. I ride through downtown, chinatown, angelino heights, filipino town, koreatown, echo park, silver lake, westlake, pico union, and I believe it's called south park?

Well anyway... everytime I would ride past somebody, I would greet them with a head nod and a friendly "hey how's it going?" and to my surprise almost 75% of the people totally ignored me and acted like I wasn't even there! And also, when riding and there are people on the sidewalk that I need to get by, I would politely excuse myself and ask to get by and most people would totally ignore me. They would clearly see and hear me and look right at me, but wouldn't move or acknowledge me! LIKE REALLY??! Why so bitter?!

I just don't get it. Is that pretty much just a big city thing in general or is Los Angeles less friendly than most cities?

I don't think people are unfriendly, but there are just too many people to say "hi" to if we tried to do it for everyone....

and you were riding on the sidewalk?....that's for pedestrians, not bikes!!....right?

Uhhh I don't know about you, but I'd rather not ride out there in those L.A. streets and risk getting hit by a car lol.

Maybe it just wasn't your day. I speak to people and have people speak to me all the time. Also, I do think it could have something to do with your riding on the sidewalk. The neighborhoods you mentioned tend to have a lot of pedestrians. They were probably annoyed.

Well hey at least I wasn't the only A-hole because there were alot of other people riding on the sidewalks as well. This whole riding a bike on the sidewalk being rude/annoying thing is totally new to me. I thought bikes were SUPPOSE to ride on the sidewalk and not in the street.

I'll give streets without sharrows a pass. Bike lanes or sharrows means you need to be on the street. It's actually been proven that sidewalk riding is more dangerous than riding in the street.

LA County Sidewalk Riding: Part1 | LADOT Bike Blog

Generally, sidewalk riding is looked down upon no matter what the law is. Sidewalk riding can actually be more dangerous than riding with traffic.

Ok so then my ignorance or being raised differently explains the funny looks for riding on the sidewalk, but how do you explain the funny looks for being friendly and saying hello?

Probably the being on a sidewalk with a bike superseded your friendliness to pedestrians. Hell, I live in a little burg in Northern California and saw a fistfight erupt between a sidewalk bike rider and a pedestrian he ran into and knock down while doing something ILLEGAL. I was like "yay" when the pedestrian kicked his butt.
