I'm planning my 3rd trip to LA this summer (August) & I'm looking to go up north to SF/Oakland area for some baseball games.

Originally I had an idea of flying into LAX. Spending a few days in LA. Then mid way through the trip drive up to SF/Oakland for a day, stay the night, come back to LA a day later. Then I'd have a couple days left in LA. This would allow my friend to see his favorite baseball team play in Oakland.

However, I realized his favorite team is playing in SF the series AFTER Oakland but it's on the last weekend we'd be in California.

So now I've thought about the idea of flying into LAX and spending the whole week in LA but at the end of the trip drive up to SF and go to a game but instead of driving back to LA just fly out of SF.

I'm not sure about the drive from LA to SF/Oakland area. I'm guessing 5-6 hours? So I could probably save 5-6 hours of vacation by NOT driving back to LA to fly out 2 days later.

I'd have to be able to return my rental car at a different location but I'm guessing that is usually okay as long as they have a rental place in SF.

Thoughts on the idea of flying out of SF versus driving back to LA to fly out of LAX?

It's 2 of us so it would be 2 tickets. Plus need a rental car for what we want to do in SF/Oakland.

I've never needed a car in SF/Oakland. Depending on dates you can get round trip BUR to OAK for as low as $59 each on Southwest. Gas alone would probably cost more than that if you rent a car and drive

Eh, I don't think it's true. Especially depending on the type car he has. I've taken my V4, filled it up with gas and drove to SanFran usually with a quarter tank still left. Just take the 5 all the way up. If you take the 101 down, then it becomes more timely, though there is a lot more scenery. In addition to that, in San Fran, you're right in that you don't need to have a car. It's convenient, but not a huge deal not to have one. In Oakland, it's a big deal.

Take Burbank to Oakland with Southwest. As mentioned, it's pretty cheap if you book early and is less of a hassle getting in and out.

And then if you want to go into SF, just take BART from Oakland airport into the city. It's pretty quick and easy. You can get around pretty much everywhere in SF using BART and Muni. I'd rent a car when you're in LA though.

The thing about flying I'm not crazy about is going through TSA..running the risk of delays etc. Last thing I want to do is sit in an airport for 3 hours on a delay during vacation. Plus driving could offer scenery?

The drive along the 101 is scenic, but will probably take about 8 hours. The faster drive which takes 5-6 hours goes right through the middle of the state, which is pretty much just farmland. Boring drive.

Burbank and Oakland are pretty quick with TSA. Quicker than LAX and SFO.

You are flying to LA, aren't you? I think you are worrying too much about having a plane delay.
