?

Aside of no nightlife to speak of, I'm not sure what the issue is.

But are there many areas within Torrance where you can live and easily take care of at least some personal and family needs, by walking? What I've seen of Torrance seems basically suburban in character, but I'm more than willing to allow that I might not have seen enough to form an accurate impression.

It depends on what type of personal and family needs you are looking to meet. In Old Torrance area, there are several restaurants that you can walk to if you live close by. If you are looking for places like CVS, etc, you have to walk a ways further or likely drive to those.
