Because nobody wants to live there, including the homeless?

Coastal California vs South Dakota, Kansas, Iowa, etc. Gee, this is a tough one.

the good thing about not being strict about "development" in certain areas like areas that Favelas grow is that the poor and the bad guys stay there. so you won't see things like Skid Row where there's a bunch of homeless people surrounded by buildings with million dollar condos.

the bad side is that ... you have places like favelas.

America is problematic from the get-go, though.

1. Everyone wants to move here causing an over-saturated market.
2. With so many people moving here, especially the rich, it drives up the cost of housing. A lot of foreigners who come here legally usually have money (my case). This makes it difficult for people who are natives to get anywhere.
3. Companies outsource jobs to cheaper countries.
4. There is no border protection so you have poor people from all over the world littering our streets.

Put this all together and you have the perfect disaster recipe.
The above has caused a huge wave of discontent, which Donald Trump rode into power.

And while there were always homeless people, the number skyrocketed in recent years. Cities like NYC and LA gentrified not just because wealthy foreigners wanted to move on and magically make the cities expensive. Developers got tax credits from the federal government (and state governments) to develop inner cities, however they were only interested in developing luxury housing that the average person in these cities couldn't afford.

Now the rise in homeless has gotten to the point where cities like NYC and LA are forced to deal with it, and increasingly forced to house them or who is going to want to move to these cities.

Re: People in the favelas aren't "bad". Brazil didn't truly deal with the legacy of slavery. Disproportionately people in the favelas are Black. I could say the same for American ghettoes. American cities did indeed have the equivalent of shacks/shantytowns, that the government TORE down and replaced with housing projects.

A judgement against NYC requires them to house the homeless, which activists have repeatedly held the city to. NYC would has more homeless than LA, but they are sheltered. To deal with the over supply of homeless, NYC is now housing them in commercial hotels. 12% of the homeless population is now living in commercial hotels, and that population is GROWING. LA could do the same.

This post is the absolute truth. There were supposed to be outpatient services available "in the community" for the mentally ill, which barely materialized, and then were eliminated or "privatized". This started with Reagan's governorship, closing down state hospitals, a ward at a time, until there were none. And, one by one, the other states followed. Thanks, Ronnie!

While clearly there are mentally ill homeless people, the people in Skid Row are disproportionately Black. The 90s war on drugs gave many of them permanent criminal records, so they won't be getting good jobs anytime soon. This has to do with the failed public policies and the marginalization of certain groups of people. Gay people are disproportionately homeless as well (a number of teens get kicked out of their parents homes due to homophobia, or get beaten up in schools and drop out).

and how much does it cost taxpayers in NYC to house 12% of the areas homeless population in commercial hotels?

What do you think is causing the "over supply" of homeless in NYC. Why isn't there an oversupply of homeless in Kansas or Iowa?

Because a lot of the homeless migrate to places like California. Where I live (Miami) I would estimate half or more of our homeless are from other states or parts of Florida. We certainly have a homeless problem in Miami but it's not necessarily because we're a factory creating the homeless.

I think you're onto something.

I don't think California, New York, Washington, or Colorado are creating homeless, but I do agree with you that they tend to migrate to those states willingly, especially to the urban cities.

It's like they're attracted to something there, like some benefit or something.

Gee, I wonder why a city with 8 million people, plus the surrounding area, a city known for wealth and for having everything anyone wants, has more homeless than bummy Kansas with its 3 million people.
