If you want fewer homeless and more laid back but still not far from downtown: Glendale, South Pasadena, or Pasadena.

I was on Wilshire right on the other side of the highway. Wasn't the nicest neighborhood, but clearly making progress from where it was a few years ago I would assume. Every time I was in DTLA to eat/drink/etc the homeless where everywhere.

I'll check out South Park for sure.

Thanks!

Can you please recommend some areas closer to DTLA that we should be considering?

Facts About Us

-Young professional couple (30ish)
-Like the outdoors, but don't necessarily have to be near a beach
-Like going out to eat/bars, but not into nightclubs, etc
-Looking to minimize a daily commute to DTLA vs. the current ride to Belmont Shore
-Willing to pay $2500 in rent

Thanks in advance!
That's a hard decision. You provided some good facts but didn't state which one of you will be working from home. I can possibly make a distinction but I'd rather not. So here's my recommendations regardless in terms of proximity to DTLA.

1. Alhambra/Monterey Park: Very close to DTLA. Very nice suburbs with apartments all around. Specifically in terms of apartments in Alhambra the close to San Marino and South Pasadena the better they are. Lots of asian culture in terms of food options. They're building up their downtown core that last time I went through both cities. Alhambra is very close to South Pasadena and Pasadena. Easy access to 710 and 10 freeways. This doesn't help with a commute to Irvine though.

2. Eagle Rock: Similar vibe to Pasadena/South Pasadena in terms of community make-up especially around Colorado Blvd. Lots of duplexes and apartments on and around Eagle Rock and Colorado Blvds. Close to DTLA with good access from the 2 Freeway. Alot of local restaurants and eateries around Colorado Blvd. There's also a Trader's Joes on Colorado as well. Me personally if I had an option to move back into the Los Angeles proper, I would definitely consider Eagle Rock among my locations.

Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for the feedback ... just to clarify, the person commuting to Irvine will no longer be doing that commute. The person in DTLA, will continue working there, hence the desire for proximity to DTLA.

Are you planning on taking public transportation into DTLA?
Which area of DTLA does the person work?

Got it. Theres probably more neighborhoods near DTLA in the city but i havent lived in LA proper for a number of years so other ppl would have to chime in for you.

I would highly recommend South Pasadena and Pasadena especially south of Colorado Blvd with good access to the 110 freeway.

I'd look at Culver City or West LA. You are close to both the 405 and the 10 and public transport. It's a reverse commute from the Westside to DTLA (under 30 mins, sometimes under 20min, at least in the morning), and/or you can use the expo line. If you have to go to Irvine, it's also a reverse commute. There's plenty around in your price range. Well served for food and outdoor recreation.
