I am moving to Southern California end of March beginning of April. I am looking for advice regarding work. I am currently an HR Manager with over 10 years of experience in HR. I have both a BA and MS in HR and Leadership respectively.

What are the chances of finding work in this field? Additionally, what opportunities are there for networking? I have done some preliminary research and it looks promising.

When you say "Southern California" it doesnt really mean anything to people here. It could be San Diego, Los Angeles, Ventura, San Bernardino, etc. All are places that are REALLY FAR from each other. Can you narrow it down a bit?

I noticed this is your first post in 5 years and all other posts from 2013 were about you wanting to move here. Glad you are finally making the move.

Where exactly (city/neighborhood) will you be living?

I am hoping to moving to Los Angeles/lower Ventura County area. I am open to San Diego as well. My daughter is in College at California Lutheran University and I want to be in Santa Monica but realize that is a very expensive area.

Yes, Santa Monica is very nice and also expensive. It's also congested. Other places further up the coast and closer to the college.

Are you moving to CA because your daughter is attending college here? Most young people go away to college to experience being on their own, not have their parents follow them to that state.

Doesn't sound like you have a good handle on where you want to live or what is out here, that college is in Thousand Oaks(as you know), your work opportunities you need to do your own research.

I can't imagine there is a shortage of HR people, I hope you have about a years worth of living expenses.

Also have thought about if your daughter needs more financial help while at school? It always ends up costing more than you think, do you really want to be out here looking for work and she needs help?

JMO, I would visit CA and she ends up finishing school here than make the move.

Then, unless you're moving with a job offer in hand, you're going to have a very tough time. A year's worth may not be necessary, but at least three or four months is absolutely mandatory.

And this confidence is based on...what?

Have you been to L.A.?

I don't know anything about the HR manager hiring scene, but, in general, the job market in SoCal is beginning to get better. It has lagged the rest of the country in coming out of recession because of the bad business climate and high numbers of unemployed in California, but, it is, I believe, just now beginning to turn the corner.

My suggestion would first figure out where the job is going to be, then you can narrow down locations to live from there.

Welcome to LA and good luck with your search!

OK, but what happens if after a semester or a year she decides she doesn't like it here or possibly the school, and starts looking at colleges in other states?

Well I hope you have at least 6 months of expenses(including things like car insurance), a landlord is going to require a security deposit, first and maybe last month's rent. If you don't have a job lined up they way want something like 3 months rent up front.

Have you gotten any interest for interviews?
