Not sure if there's a thread on this, but I thought it would be helpful. What place is the "best value" area? By this, I don't mean what is the best place in LA. I'm sure that would be one of the most expensive. I mean where would you get the most for your money.

That depends, of course, on what you mean by "value". If you value being close to the beach, for example, the price is going to be different than if you value having much more space and as a result, being further away from L.A.'s night life, etc. L.A. County is a huge area, so you have to be much more specific, please!

Personally, I would value almost any area that lets me be within 15 miles of where I work. Yes, the commutes here are that bad!

personally, if your going to be renting within the city of los angeles, i think that mar vista and palms are going to be your best values as far as neighborhoods go. both of those hoods have much cheaper rent than their other westside communities but still have good central locations to beaches, century city, beverly hills, westwood, culver city, and santa monica. although these neighborhoods are lacking the dining and night life options, your certainly not far away from it.

I will agree Palms/Mar Vista. Downtown Long Beach, Glendale, and Belmont Shore are some others. Santa Clarita if you are planning on buying.

I've always felt that the majority of lakewood was "undervalued". its really the same as some of the western OC cities without the OC premium
