it really depends on where you want this house to be located. you could easily live off of $175k in a house with a pool and a/c in the valley somewhere. however, if you're looking for a house in the hills, that will be a different story.

you may also check mar vista, beverlywood, and southern parts of westwood (south of olympic. there are many, many houses in these areas, some of which have to have pools. they certainly aren't cheap, but they aren't bevery hills either.

Do you already have the position, or will you be looking? If you have the position, I would settle the salary issue before you move. More than one heart has been broken by moving to so Cal without knowing where they would work and home much they would make. This is a very competitive job market. I wish you the best.

Be sure to max out your 401k, or ROTH. You will be hit hard with taxes if you don't.

I do think the OP had a good question. A house with a pool in a decent part of town is going to start at atleast $3,500/month to rent. Even with a near $200k salary, $3,500 (probably more) is a lot of money to pay every month.

Work out what you are worth to the company in a average year and if they can`t pay one fifth of that as your salary, then they don`t deserve to have you working for them.

You can find a great home with pool [air conditioning is basically the norm even close to the beach though you won't need it near as much as in inland areas]. You can find a nice place in Santa Monica\West LA but in the Valley it is likely less expensive for more house\pool.
