I'm Canadian. I've lived in Canada all my life. Yet for whatever reason, I LOVE Los Angeles. I've loved it since my first visit there when I was 21. I've been almost every summer for 5 years.

But I love the things most people don't. I love how the smog gives everything a cinematic, yellowish glow. I love how everything is spread out. I love how you have to drive everywhere. I love everything everyone hates about this city.

But also, I love the neighbourhoods. I love Eagle Rock and Silverlake and Echo Park, and Highland Park. I love how each area is so unique. I love Downtown, mid-Wilshire, Westwood, Brentwood...and I would love to explore East LA, South LA etc.

I love how you can hike in the inner city. I love how each bend of the freeway gives a new perspective. I love how the history and the mix of races and even the racial tension has come out - LA maybe be the stereotypical racially segregated city, but have you been to the East Coast? In LA, there's tension because EVERYONE has the opportunity to succeed. In Philly, all the bad jobs are taken by African Americans - there's no racial tension because white jobs aren't threatened.

hmmmm... that is a different way of looking at it. I just don't think that there is racial tension in L.A because African Americans are more upwardly mobile there. Also if this message board is any indication, a lot of the tension seems to be directed at the hispanic community not African Americans.
I am a Canadian as well who also loves L.A, (not the smog though) I go there atleast 2 or 3 times a year. I plan on moving down there after school on a TN visa.

It's interesting. When I lived in the Southland, I met a few Canadians who also really loved it. Somehow, there is something culturally in LA (well, at least the old LA of the 1980s and prior) that was, oddly, Canadian. I never could exactly put my finger on it but vaguely sensed it.

Reminds me of the famous Jack Kent Cooke (original owner of the LA Kings Hockey team) quote.

Cooke had been told that there were over 300,000 former Canadians living within a three-hour drive of Los Angeles, and remarked, "Now I know why they left Canada: They hate hockey!"
