My husband and I take day trips to LA every so often (we live in San Diego) and are thinking of doing another one soon. I'm thinking of taking a "longer route" and going across the Angeles Crest Highway from Glendale to where it meets the 15, rather than just go back down the 5.

My question is--Is going that way scenic enough to warrant the extra ~2 hours or so it will take? I'm a photographer and I really don't mind taking that time if it has awesome views of the Valley and such, but that is quite long. It looks pretty nice from Google Street View, but there's only so much I can tell.

Also, is there still snow cover on the peaks up there?

Thanks in advance!

Angeles Crest Highway is mostly desolate and black now thanks to the Station Fire. It's also dangerous to traverse in wet weather with the mud slide potential since there is little vegetation left to hold back the debris and topsoil.

But the views on both sides are spectacular. Wait until things dry out and take the trip. You won't regret it.

No problem. Here is the current CalTrans status as well, since they're doing repairs on the road. It's closed in certain sections and other areas close depending on the hour of the day, as indicated on the website.

Go for it, I would. The views are worth it and it's good to explore. If you do and like it, you can also check out Rim of the World Scenic Drive in San Bernardino that takes you to Big Bear. I like middle to late spring the most just because of the snowcapped mountains with less chances of adverse weather.

There are "back roads" to the east of Big Bear that will let you look out over the desert. THAT is a spectacular view.
