Because they don't have Tony Villar and a city council full of cretins.

Corruption over ineptitude? (Although Tony V does really seem to be making an effort, the city council is a sewer of incompetent short sighted hacks, not surprising considering that almost all are termed out former state legislators)

L.A. doesn't have the cultural heritage of those other cities and has a worse public transportation system than any of them.

Also, NY, London and Chicago are more diverse than Los Angeles.

to be honest, i don't care. i know LA can be a great city to live in, nearly on par with likes of NY & London in the areas that are important to me (and LA is considerably cheaper to boot).

Why do you think LA should be in the top 10? Everything about LA in the last year is bad news. The quality of life for much of the city has decreased greatly with all the fees and higher taxes. LA's world status has taken a massive hit from this because the city's bond grade decreased. The lower the grade, the less likely investors will invest in LA and LA has to pay a higher interest rate on a loan...basically, LA's credit score dropped. Architecture...what impressive buildings do we have? Capitol Records and the Getty come to mind but that really doesn't compete to many of the cities listed.

Heres my breakdown

The entire country knows California has become a joke. LA is in worse shape than the state as a whole. Tony Villar is an inept mayor and for whatever reason, most people refuse to accept it.

I agree more or less with this assessment, but I'd put architecture and quality of life even lower. When the most impressive building projects in the area are freeways, you have a bit of a problem with architecture(not that I particularly care, but housing and business in LA is more designed for functionality than looks). The Bradbury building is surrounded by a bunch of crap. Quality of life is poor here considering the high cost of housing and goods, the haphazard public transport, the traffic, etc.

I'd also put food and drink to a 10 though, considering the stellar ethnic food from many different cultures(particularly asian and south/central american cultures). LA is also a very affordable food city compared to cities that may have a higher food profile like San Francisco or New York.

Anyways, LA isn't a top 10 greatest city, that's for sure.

Because it's an unsightly, over-crowded sprawl rather than a "real" city!

1) Actually, there are plenty of people in the rest of the country still willing to come and live in the LA area. The link below is a story discussing the latest census data for the LA area and how our population is GROWING. In the article, Dowell Myers, a professor of urban planning and demography at USC, said some of the newcomers are probably younger people from other parts of the country deciding to give the region a try.

L.A. area population rising again, new census data show | L.A. NOW | Los Angeles Times

2) The Mayor of Los Angeles is NEARLY a CEREMONIAL position...much less power than any other big city in the nation. This is BY DESIGN dating back to "progressive era" reforms. So I don't get people's paranoid delusions about Tony V.'s performance....

Finally, I have been around long enough to see LA/So.Calif. pronounced dead....only to see it come back despite the naysayers. YES, we have problems but we also have MANY STRENGTHS including a diverse economy on the edge of the Pacific Rim.

Are you kidding??? This statement indicates you have NO CLUE about LA or architecture in general.

The Bradbury building is located on the northern edge of the Broadway Theatre district - a district on the National Register of Historic Places.

Broadway Theater and Commercial District - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With twelve HISTORIC movie palaces located along a six-block stretch of Broadway (from 3rd to 9th), it is the largest concentration of historic movie palaces in the United States.

Granted they have been neglected BUT that is changing with Broadway finally getting the attention and care it deserves.

You need to clarify what you mean by "diverse".....whatever disadvantages there are to LA a lack of diversity is certainly NOT one of them.
