Here's my situation. I'm living with my parents on the Westside and I've been here too long. I need to get out. I'm a student and I work roughly 30 hours a week. I make around 1,300 a month.

I don't want to live with roomates. I've done that before and i'd rather live with the folks.

with medical ins and car ins that knocks me down to 1k. If i can find a studio apt for 500-600 would that be cutting to close? Stay with the folks until i finish my degree?

I also do some freelance writing that brings in some cash but not much..usually only $200 at a time and not enough to depend on.

Simple answer: No, either you will need to re-think the roomate situation or be happy your parents are allowing you to live with them.

Maybe way far out somewhere, but I've never heard of anyone paying that little in anywhere even semi-convenient.

How about renting a room in a house? I think there's a subtle difference there between that and a more traditional roommate experience. It would be more in the lines of a studio without a private bath or kitchen. (and some might even have private bath) Even that would be tough on that budget, though. I'd stick it out with the parents if you can and save your money.

You can't even find a studio in a decent neighborhood in Minneapolis for $500 a month. LA is about twice the cost of living as Mpls. If studios in LA were $500, I would have been there years ago. Ain't paying about a $1000 for a studio.

If you're going to school plus working 30 hours a week, you're better of with your folks. Having your own place takes time as well as money.

Save all you can and graduate with savings instead of debt! That will give you more options.

Yeah, it was possible ... 15 years ago. Only it's wasn't officially a studio ... it was a converted garage, with a very small bathroom and a mini-fridge + hotplate for a kitchen.

Since you have the option, stay with your folks.

Stay at home and finish your degree. You don't need the added expense of rent, especially when you might have an unexpected emergency, such as a car repair or doctor bill, that might require a large portion of your take home pay in a given month.

You're not going to find anything decent for $500, certainly not comparable with the much of the Westside. If you want to get out of the house more, take up a hobby or sports league, but if you don't have to move out, I would stay put.
